For almost 30 years, the Soul City Institute has been working with young people from the ages of 10 to 24 years through our various programmes in and outside of schools. Together with our young stakeholders, we have been advocating for their sexual and reproductive health rights, as part of our vision to advance gender equality and equity.
Our Women’s Month celebrations would not be complete without an on-the-ground engagement that centres young women and their lived experiences. This influenced our decision to partner with the Ekurhuleni MMC of Health, Social Development and SRAC, Bridget Thusi on a drive to improve youth health services, on August 30, 2023.
Stigma, discrimination and lack of quality and timeous care are often cited by young people as some of the factors contributing to their poor health outcomes. We will be sharing how health innovation can advance Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR), through our partnership with Tiko and Bwise.
At Soul City, we believe in the saying “nothing for us, without us”. We invite young residents of the Ekurhuleni region to show up at the Calcourt Dlephu Clinic, Tsakane in their numbers and be part of the solution to increase health access. Our Rise Club Members, Social Mobilisers and fellows of our Feminist Leadership and Activism Centre will join MMC Thusi in a dialogue to unpack the challenges that young people face when seeking healthcare.
The event will also create a platform for the MMC to share her mandate and how she hopes to address the challenges highlighted by young people.
We look forward to closing off the month on a high note and setting the tone for a fruitful journey in our campaign efforts beyond.
