On the box - Soul City

As we celebrate 20 years of democracy, one of the longest-serving drama series, SoulCity, also celebrates 20 years of tackling community health issues.

The epic drama has had 12 seasons on air and has seen a diverse range of actors.

The trailblazing edutainment drama has not lost its significance and has returned to where it all started by reviving some of the characters from a bygone era, such as Sister Bettina (Lillian Dube), Sol Grootboom (David Denis) and Nomfundo Dladla (Sindi Dlathu).

The central themes for this season include re-engineering primary healthcare, maternal and infant care, contraception, sexual assault and financial literacy.

But it is the two young foot soldiers, Nunu Khumalo (Riri) and Phila Mazibuko (AB Abednego), who occupy centre stage as they go from home to home interacting with the people of the community.

The real issues are highlighted here.

The two often find that their own prejudices hinder their progress.

This underscores the many challenges community workers encounter daily, while also highlighting the plight of ordinary South Africans in their communities.
