Human rights practitioners call for improved health care

The recent tragedy where a toddler was beaten by a rodent in Alex was cited as a perfect example where access to quality health care is still a struggle for the needy and poor. This was said during a panel debate hosted by the Soul City Institute and their partners in civil society movement; Black Sash, Human Rights Commission and Health Systems Trust. The debate looked into how social determinants of health such as water, sanitation, education and jobs contribute to a healthier society.

Primary Health Care still in sick bay but showing signs of improvement

THE National Department of Health is making some inroads into providing universal primary health care, but there is still lots of work to do.

Professor Heather Zar, head of the department of paediatrics and child health at UCT, said: `South Africa has seen good progress with prevention of n1other-to- chi_ld transmission, with strong immunisation programmes.
