Building an Inclusive Future: Reflections From a Workshop on Intellectual Disability Awareness

Our FLAC Fellow from Limpopo, Ankonisaho Bhakaha, recently attended a transformative workshop focused on intellectual disability awareness, inclusion, and equal treatment. The experience offered deep learning, practical skills development, and a powerful reminder of what true inclusion looks like in action.
Building an Inclusive Future: Reflections From a Workshop on Intellectual Disability Awareness

Over three days, the workshop moved from awareness-building to empowerment, and finally to showcasing real talent and supporting economic participation.

Day 1: Understanding Intellectual Disability

The first day focused on creating awareness and challenging misconceptions about intellectual disability. Participants explored the everyday challenges faced by people with intellectual disabilities and reflected on how society can do better in promoting dignity and inclusion.

A key message from the day was clear:

People with intellectual disabilities are capable individuals who deserve respect, dignity, and equal opportunities.

This session emphasized that inclusion begins with understanding and understanding begins with listening, learning, and unlearning stereotypes.

Day 2: Turning Disabilities Into Abilities

The second day shifted the focus from limitations to strengths.

Participants were introduced to a wide range of creative and technical skills demonstrated by individuals with intellectual disabilities, including:

  • Sculptures
  • Bead-making
  • Portrait art
  • Fashion design
  • Plumbing

Beyond recognising talent, the workshop also focused on economic empowerment. Participants were guided through the basics of developing business plans, helping them understand how their skills can be turned into sustainable income opportunities.

This session reinforced an important truth: when given the right support and opportunity, talent can thrive anywhere.

Day 3: Inclusion in Practice, Showcasing Talent, and Business Registration

The final day brought theory into practice.

Discussions centred on how communities, institutions, and individuals can actively promote inclusion and create supportive environments for people with intellectual disabilities.

Participants had the opportunity to showcase their talents, highlighting creativity, innovation, and skill. These moments challenged limiting perceptions and demonstrated that ability exists in many forms.

A significant milestone of the day was the facilitation of business registrations, allowing participants to take real steps toward formalising their work and building economic independence.

The key takeaway from the day was powerful and simple:

Treat people with disabilities the same as those without focus on their abilities, not their limitations.

Key Reflection: Inclusion Is Action, Not Just Awareness

This workshop reinforced that inclusion is not just about awareness it is about opportunity, dignity, and access.

People with intellectual disabilities are not defined by what they cannot do, but by the wide range of skills, creativity, and potential they bring to society.

When these abilities are recognised and supported, communities become stronger, more diverse, and more just.

Final Thought

True inclusion means creating spaces where everyone is seen, heard, and valued.

By embracing the talents and contributions of individuals with intellectual disabilities, we take a step closer to building a society where no one is left behind—and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
