At Soul City Institute for Social Justice, we carry this responsibility with deep commitment and urgency. Across South Africa and the SADC region, we continue to work alongside communities, young people, women, activists, and leaders who are confronting some of the greatest injustices facing our continent today. We know that gender-based violence and femicide are not isolated incidents or private matters they are systemic and political failures that threaten the dignity, safety, and freedom of African women and girls every single day.
As we mark Africa Day 2026, we reaffirm our belief that the Africa we want cannot exist while women and children continue to live in fear, while inequality deepens, and while young people are denied opportunities to thrive. The future of Africa depends on creating societies rooted in justice, accountability, compassion, and equality. It depends on investing in young people, protecting human rights, and building communities where every person can live free from violence and discrimination.
Today, we honour every survivor who refused to be silenced. We honour every young woman finding her voice through our Feminist Leadership and Activism Centre (FLAC). We honour community champions, healthcare workers, activists, and feminist leaders who continue to stand on the frontlines of change despite immense challenges. Their courage reminds us that transformation is possible and that a different Africa can and must be built.
Africa’s greatest resource has always been its people. The resilience of our communities, the leadership of young people, and the determination of women across this continent continue to shape a future grounded in hope and justice. The work ahead remains long, but we remain steadfast in our commitment to advancing social justice, gender equality, and the rights and dignity of all people.
This Africa Day, let us recommit ourselves to building an Africa where freedom is not selective, where equality is not negotiable, and where every person can live with dignity, safety, and opportunity.
Happy Africa Day.
