The event reflected on the courage and sacrifice of the young people who fought for freedom during the Soweto Uprising, while encouraging participants to embrace opportunities that contribute to healthier, safer and more empowered communities.

The programme opened with a welcome address and prayer, followed by a presentation on the significance of Youth Day. A range of stakeholders delivered educational and motivational sessions aimed at equipping young people with the knowledge and support needed to navigate everyday challenges.

Representatives from the Youth Crime Desk, the South African Police Service (SAPS), Sundumbili CHC Social Work and Psychology Services, the Department of Education, loveLife Youth Centre, Public Relations Operations (PRO), Soul Buddyz from Sundumbili Primary School, and the Soul City Institute's B-Wise programme shared valuable information on issues affecting young people.

Discussions focused on the importance of education, career planning, mental health, substance abuse prevention, crime prevention, gender-based violence (GBV), HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention, teenage pregnancy, and making informed life choices.

Throughout the programme, young people were encouraged to make use of youth-friendly health services, seek support when faced with challenges, and remain committed to achieving their educational and personal goals. Speakers reminded participants that every young person has the potential to become a positive leader and role model within their families, schools and communities.

One of the highlights of the day was the participation of the Soul Buddyz Club from Sundumbili Primary School. The learners enthusiastically shared what it means to be a Soul Buddy someone who is caring, respectful, supportive and responsible. They encouraged their peers to stand together against bullying, support one another during difficult times, and make healthy, positive choices that contribute to safer schools and stronger communities. Their presentation reinforced the values of empathy, teamwork and youth leadership.

The event also featured cultural performances, poetry, music and interactive discussions, creating a safe and engaging space for young people to express themselves, celebrate their talents and connect with available support services. Participants were given the opportunity to ask questions and access information on health and social services available in their community.

The Youth Month commemoration concluded with words of appreciation to all stakeholders whose collaboration contributed to the success of the event. Through partnerships and continued investment in young people, the programme demonstrated a shared commitment to empowering the next generation with the knowledge, confidence and support needed to build healthier and more resilient communities.

Together, we can continue creating spaces where young people are informed, empowered and inspired to thrive.
