Through their participation in school activities and peer engagement, learners in both clubs identified bullying as a recurring issue within the school environment. Instead of remaining passive, they chose to respond with action, demonstrating leadership, awareness, and responsibility.
Bullying is a significant concern in many school environments and has been widely linked to negative mental health outcomes among young people, including anxiety, depression, isolation, and emotional distress.
Research and education sector observations in South Africa continue to highlight that many learners experience bullying in different forms physical, verbal, and online and that under-reporting remains a challenge due to fear of retaliation or lack of trust in intervention systems. These realities make school-based peer-led initiatives, like those at Hillbrow Primary, critical in promoting early intervention, awareness, and safer school environments.
The two clubs came together to design an awareness campaign aimed at educating fellow learners about the effects of bullying. Their goal was not only to highlight the problem but also to promote values of kindness, respect, and inclusion across the school community.
This initiative reflects the power of youth-led solutions in creating safer and more supportive learning environments.
The awareness campaign focuses on encouraging learners to speak up, support one another, and understand the emotional and social impact of bullying. By fostering open conversations, the clubs aim to shift school culture towards one that values empathy and mutual respect. The work of Safe Handz Buddyz and Rise Together Soul Buddyz demonstrates how young people can be agents of change when given the space and support to lead. Their efforts contribute to building a safer, more inclusive Hillbrow Primary School where every learner can thrive.
Youth leadership remains a powerful tool in addressing social challenges, and this initiative is a strong example of action driven by awareness, courage, and collective responsibility.
