Young people play an important role in shaping healthier and more informed communities. Creating spaces where they can openly discuss issues affecting their health and wellbeing is essential in empowering them to make informed decisions about their lives and futures.

In support of this goal, a Youth Engagement Session focusing on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) was recently conducted at Ekurhuleni East College.

The session brought together students in an interactive and informative discussion aimed at increasing awareness and understanding of important health-related topics affecting young people today. The engagement created a safe platform where students could ask questions, share experiences, and receive accurate information about sexual and reproductive health.

Among the topics discussed during the session were HIV and AIDS prevention, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), contraceptive use, teenage pregnancy prevention, and healthy relationships. Facilitators encouraged open conversations around these issues, helping students better understand the importance of making informed choices, protecting their health, and accessing support services when needed.

HIV and AIDS prevention formed an important part of the discussion, with learners being educated about methods of prevention, the importance of regular testing, and reducing stigma associated with HIV. Students also learned about common STIs, how they are transmitted, ways to prevent infection, and the importance of early treatment and medical support. These discussions highlighted the need for ongoing awareness and education to help young people protect themselves and others.

The session also focused on contraceptive use and teenage pregnancy prevention. Students were encouraged to understand the importance of responsible decision-making, consent, and accessing reliable sexual and reproductive health information. Facilitators explained the different contraceptive options available and encouraged learners to make use of healthcare services for guidance and support.

Healthy relationships were another important topic discussed during the engagement. Young people were encouraged to build relationships based on respect, communication, trust, and consent. The discussion also addressed peer pressure, gender dynamics, and the importance of recognising unhealthy or abusive behaviours in relationships. By promoting positive relationship values, the session aimed to equip students with knowledge that supports both their physical and emotional wellbeing.

Students were also introduced to the Ba-Wise platform, a youth-focused platform that provides young people with accessible and reliable health information. The platform serves as a valuable resource where youth can learn more about SRHR topics, access guidance, and connect with relevant support services. Learners were encouraged to use the platform as a trusted source of information and support.

Another key focus of the session was access to youth-friendly health services. Many young people face barriers when trying to access healthcare due to stigma, fear, or lack of information. The engagement highlighted the importance of youth-friendly services that are welcoming, non-judgmental, and supportive of young people’s health needs. Students were encouraged to seek help early and make use of available healthcare resources in their communities.

The youth engagement eession at Ekurhuleni East College demonstrated the importance of creating spaces where young people can access accurate information and openly discuss issues affecting their health and wellbeing. Through education, dialogue, and empowerment, initiatives like these continue to strengthen youth participation in building healthier and safer communities.
