Statement of Demand: Youth priorities following the 2026 SONA

Your Excellency, Mr. President,

I am Mandisa Mazibuko, a young person Feminist Leadership and Activism Centre Fellow from Eswatini, speaking in solidarity with the youth of South Africa. Even though I am not a citizen of this country, our nations are neighbours, and our challenges are connected.

Youth Unemployment: A Regional Crisis

Youth unemployment is a serious problem in both South Africa and Eswatini. When young people lack jobs, other social challenges intensify. We see higher crime rates, teenage pregnancies, drug and substance abuse, depression, and even suicide. Gender-based violence also increases in communities where young people have limited opportunities. Unemployment takes away hope. It leaves young people feeling forgotten and frustrated. When youth do not have access to meaningful opportunities, society as a whole suffers.

Our Call to Action

I respectfully ask that youth unemployment be made a top priority. Young people need:

  • Real job opportunities across sectors
  • Skills development and vocational training
  • Support for young entrepreneurs
  • Stronger programmes to prevent gender-based violence and promote mental health
  • When young people are empowered, they become part of the solution.

The Future of Our Region

The future of our region depends on the decisions made today. Mr. President, when young people work, nations thrive. When young people are neglected, societies suffer. The choice is urgent, and the time is now.

Thank you.
