Raising Voices of Young Women and Girls

Soul City Institute for Social Justice (SCI) focuses on social and behaviour change communication and advocating for gender equality and the rights of young women and girls. With funding from the European Union, SCI has partnered with Women’s Net and Masimanyane Women’s Rights International to birth the Raising Voices of Young Women and Girls programme which focuses on democracy, governance, human rights and advocacy. The programme is run in the North West, Free State and Mpumalanga provinces.

Using the International legal instrument, Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) Framework, which our state has ratified, the Raising Voices of Young Women and Girls Programme aims to strengthen the capacity of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and networks offering young people opportunities to actively participate in governance, social development, and sustainable and inclusive growth.

The participants of the programme are equipped with skills and support to create and facilitate content through Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to hold governments and other state entities accountable to the CEDAW framework by highlighting challenges they face within their communities and advocating for change.

This project will contribute directly to the Sustainable Development (SDG) Goal 5 which sets out to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Its specific focus is to ensure women’s full effective participation & equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision making, in political, economic, & public life.
