Soul Expressions - South Africa

Summary

Soul Expressions is a 30 minute radio talk show that aims to highlight various health topics of national priority in South Africa, such as information on how to access information on HIV/AIDS and treatment. The show targets policy implementers and decision makers within government and civil society in South Africa.

Main Communication Strategies

The show uses education programming slots on radio stations. Presenters of the shows or DJs of each participating station receive training from experts on topics to be discussed on the shows. The organizers, Soul City Institute for Health and Development Communication, believe that the host needs to have a greater knowledge base and be "clued up" in order to communicate effectively about the topics.

After the training, the talk show hosts receive scripts with questions, content, model answers and lists of guests to be interviewed. The training workshops take three days, from Friday to Sunday. They are held four times a year (every three months) with a graduation at the end of the 4th training session.

The shows are broadcast in ten radio stations in the language of their respective stations.
