Soul City 6 Launch

Television

The Soul City 6 drama will now be on air Thursdays at 21h 00 and the first episode will be broadcast on the 8th May 2003.

The launch of the Soul City TV drama and CD took place on 14th April 2003 at the Johannesburg Zoo and all of our stakeholders and partner organizations have been invited to the event. The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, the Honourable, Mrs. Nosisiwe Mapisa-Ngqakula delivered the key note address.

SABC 1 had identified children as a major theme for the period May-June 2003. They have therefore adopted a campaign called “One community – Every Child My Child.” Soul City will share branding with the SABC and all other partners of the campaign. These partners are Dept of Social Development, Home Affairs, ACESS and Khomanani. The launch event will be a joint launch of the series and the campaign.

Purpose of campaign

Simunye viewers will be informed about the situation of orphans and vulnerable children and mobilised to take action to support them in a range of different ways. This includes the donation of their time, money, food and clothing as well as getting involved in organisations that support children and helping children and families register for the grants that are provided be government.

Radio

The Series 6 radio programmes were launched successfully in all 9 provinces and on all 9 African language stations. Each radio station had an individual launch with a public mobilization component. This mobilization was supported by the Departments of Home Affairs, Social Development, The South African Police and ACESS: the aim was to encourage members of the public to register their children for the Child Support Grant.

The “HIV and AIDS, Action Now” booklet was available in all 11 languages and distributed widely during these launches.

Booklets

The combined booklet on HIV/AIDS – “HIV/AIDS…action now” was the first booklet to be printed and distributed. The other 3 booklets, i.e. HIV/AIDS and Children, Asthma and Depression will all be distributed at the time the television series will be on air. These 3 booklets will be serialized in 3 major newspapers: Die Burger, Sunday Times and ILanga. In addition, 250 000 of “HIV and AIDS affected children” will be distributed through the Educator’s Voice.
