Soul Buddyz, most popular TV series for kids back on air with sister actuality programme

29 June 2005: Soul Buddyz is a real-life television drama specifically developed to empower 8 to 12-year olds and the adults in their lives. Each time it is broadcast it has been the most popular television programme in the country for children.

The new series appeals not only to children, but also to the parents and teachers of 8 - 12 year olds.

With strong real-life stories that affect children, their parents and their teachers, it delivers the positive message that all irrespective of age should - and can talk about issues. It also breaks the stereotype that children are incapable of making informed choices and reinforces the message that kids can be active citizens in society. This is television that you definitely want to watch with your children!

Due to the tremendous success of the previous two series, SABC1 has placed the series in a prime time slot of 19h00 on Wednesdays from 6 July.

After watching Soul Buddyz children voiced that they wanted to imitate their heroes in the programme. Due to this demand, Soul Buddyz Clubs were set up across the country and they have attracted 12 000 children in 1 900 clubs countrywide who are beavering away as agents for social change in their communities and in their own lives.

This year, running in parallel with the Soul Buddyz episodes, will be a new television programme called Buddyz on the Move (BoM). BoM is the first actuality programme developed specifically for children and shows Soul Buddyz Club members' involvement in their communities. It is a sister programme to Soul Buddyz.

BoM will be presented in a magazine format and is linked to the weekly Soul Buddyz drama broadcast through the focus issues such as nutrition, HIV/Aids and money management. Issues which are dealt with in the drama series would be highlighted in an episode broadcast Saturday morning in BoM. Viewers will see how real children are coping with these issues. The programme is anchored by two well known Buddyz actors and ordinary children provide the content for the programme.

BoM will be broadcast on Saturdays at 07h30 from 9 July on SABC1, following the Wednesday drama broadcast.

Credibility of the programme through partnerships

Soul Buddyz and Buddyz on the Move are developed by the Soul City Institute in partnership with SABC Education. These series are a public private partnership between the Soul City Institute, BP and Old Mutual. The series also have the support of two South African government departments of Public Service and Administration and Health. International donors include Development Co-operation Ireland, United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) and PEPFAR. ENDS
